Marília Mendonça

On November 5th, Brazilians said goodbye to the singer Marília Mendonça, who died in a tragic plane crash while on tour. The young musician, who was only 26 years old, left her mark in Brazilian country music, and will be deeply missed.

Marília was a feminist by instinct, and kickstarted a revolution in Brazilian country music. She sang about relationships, betrayal, prostitution, heartbreak, family, friendship, and abusive relationships, but always from a woman’s point of view.

The Brazilian country music scene, usually dominated by men, is probably one of the main cultural industry products within Brazil today. The songs, created for the masses, play constantly in bars, shops, and on the radio. Marília’s songs reached more people than any tweet or academic essay. By using colloquial language and talking about everyday struggles, Marília urged women to make a stand, love themselves and refuse subservience.

Rest in peace, Marília. Your legacy is immortal ❤️
